Time and time again we hear about people who have had an immense amount of luck strike rich on the lottery, especially here in Michigan. Dozens of Michigan residents have become millionaires after hitting the lottery, some of them have become repeat winners, and there are even lottery clubs who get together to strategize and play several different lottery games and split the earnings.

For some reason, that I definitely cannot tell you, some people don't collect their earnings. I'm not sure if they forget to cash in their ticket, if they never check to see that they won, or something else happens, either way, the funds are never relinquished to them. In Michigan, this number varies by year but is often in the hundred millions and sometimes will even surpass the 1 billion mark.

Naturally, you're thinking about where the uncollected funds are going, and the answer is one that should be accepted by all. One thing I can say is that I love that the Michigan Lottery doesn't just keep the funds but instead donates that money to the state's school aid fund each year.

Did You Know That's What Happens To Uncollected Lottery Funds in Michigan?

MLive reports:

For the seventh consecutive year, the Michigan Lottery contributed more than $1 billion to the state School Aid Fund. On Wednesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the Lottery’s contribution in 2025 came in at $1.16 billion. “Here in Michigan, we’re connecting our kids with the tools they need to learn, grow, and thrive whether they’re in pre-K or their senior year,” Whitmer said. “That includes record per-pupil funding of more than $10,000 for every child in every school, free breakfast and lunch for all to save parents almost $1,000 a year per kid, and record investments to help kids read. This year’s lottery contributions will help build on that progress and make a difference for students, educators, and schools across Michigan. Let’s keep working together to make a difference for our kids.”

The state of Michigan also mandates that all revenue made from the lottery is to be given to the state's school aid fund as well. This has contributed more than $30 million dollars to the fund since the initiative was introduced in 1972.
