Saugatuck Brewing Kalamazoo Indefinitely Closes Following Roof Fire

It felt like it took forever for Saugatuck Brewing to come back in Kalamazoo. They left their original location at the old Gonzo's location in 2022 with intentions to open in downtown Kalamazoo shortly after. But through a series of "unfortunate events," it took MUCH longer than anticipated.

Now, after just a little more than a year of being open in the iconic Olde Peninsula Building, they have been forced to close indefinitely following a fire in the building.

For the record, being closed "indefinitely" does not mean they're never coming back. It only means they don't know how long the brewery could remain closed, which could be anywhere from a few days, to never opening again. Though, judging by what we've heard about the fire, it's definitely going to be more than a few days.

Executives say they are now assessing the damage after the fire Sunday morning, Aug. 25th, on the roof of the building. And while the actual restaurant is far from where the fire was, crews of course had to put it out using fire hoses and an incredible amount of water, which did do some damage throughout the entire building.

Crews responded to the roof fire at around 10:35 Sunday morning, and closed all surrounding streets while they fought the blaze. Thankfully nobody reported any injuries.

Hopefully this doesn't mean the brewery and restaurant doesn't stay closed long, since they just recently updated their facility to include more brewpub games to attract a more active environment.

Crews are still investigating what started the blaze, but it doesn't seem the actual restaurant and tap room were to blame.

In fact, Kalamazoo Public Safety crews had already responded to five other fires in the area that morning alone, which is suspiciously high. They're encouraging anyone with information to contact them directly, or through Kalamazoo Silent Observer.
