A total of 25 public safety officers with 4 different fire apparatus battled the fire for approximately 4 hours. Heavy equipment also had to be brought in to access hot spots within the remains of the building.
The Village Inn Apartments has had its entire complex condemned, after inspection by the Battle Creek Fire Marshal and the City’s Building Inspector. Whether or not the buildings will be demolished remains to be seen.
The fire reportedly started around 10:30pm Sunday. Authorities believe that everyone inside was able to get out, though at least seven residents had to be treated for smoke inhalation and one firefighter suffered from overexertion.
The blaze started at 7am Sunday at the home in the 800 block of Lake St, where fireworks began exploding on the front porch. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says that they had to take a defensive strategy and that they couldn’t enter the residence due to the flames
