Kalamazoo may be considered, for many years, an 'undersubbed' market. Take away national stalwarts Subway and Jimmy John's, regional chain Jersey Giant and local favorite Wally's and there aren't many other options - and if you listen into the wind, you'll hear lamentations over the loss years ago of the iconic and beloved Galley Subs.

In recent years chains like Penn Station East Coast Subs and Firehouse Subs have established beachheads in the area. Now get ready for another player to enter the game as Jersey Mike's has set plans to open in Kalamazoo.

The chain has been on an expansion tear in recent years and putting a bit boost in national advertising with Restaurant Business Online declaring them the 'winner of 2020.'

The Coming Soon section of the company's website lists a location at 4315 West Main in Kalamazoo, which puts it in the plaza with Tropical Smoothie Cafe just east of Drake.

Until the Kalamazoo location opens, you'd need to head to South Bend, Grand Rapids, Holland or Lansing to find one.

The topic of local sub shops came up recently (as it very often does) on the Kalamazoo Menu Facebook group. One poster dropped a hint on the incoming Jersey Mike's.

If you've not had the chance to visit a Jersey Mike's, this video gives you a good look at the food prep there:
