It's been the football home for Portage Central and Portage Northern High Schools for over half a century. It's been the home of gigantic annual Fourth of July fireworks displays for a long time, too.  After almost 60 years, Friday night, one era ends and another will begin next year and beyond.

Portage's McCamley Field will see its final football game when the Portage Central Mustangs host St. Joe. Next year, both Central and Northern will play at Nothern's new field. Then, when the McCamley Field upgrade is finished, each team have its own home.

Organizers have a special night planned for the finale, complete with a military fly-over and are hoping to break the McCamley attendance record, which is 11,000. Weather conditions are expected to be excellent.

Interestingly, even with all the football tradition at McCamley Field over the years, only one Portage student has gone on to play in the National Football League. Central's Pete Metzelaars played in four Super Bowls for the Buffalo Bills in the 1990's, and finished his career with the Detroit Lions. (Metzelaars finally got a Super Bowl ring as an assistant coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2007.)
