You Are Kidding. Lions Sign QB Who Learned Position On YouTube
Let's get it out of the way right at the top. "This is sooooooo Lions".
CBSSports.com says the quarterback the Detroit Lions signed this week to backup Matthew Stafford learned to play the position by watching YouTube.
But wait, there's more. It also says he's a "talented bowler". And the punchlines just keep on comin'. "For an NFL quarterback, he's a talented....bowler."
Now, I understand, Kurt Warner went from being a bag boy at the grocery store all the way to the Hall of Fame in Canton. But...
It's actually not a horrible resume.
Despite not playing quarterback in high school (he played receiver in an offense that seldom threw the ball), Perez walked on at Southwestern Community College, where he started his college career as the Jaguars' ninth string quarterback...Perez, who learned how to become a quarterback by watching instructional videos on YouTube, overcame a broken leg before helping the Jaguars win the American Division Championship Bowl in 2014. He then earned another walk-on opportunity, this time at Texas A&M-Commerce. After winning the starting job and leading Commerce to an 11-2 record in 2016, Perez guided them to a national title in 2017. He threw for 4,999 yards that season and was named the Harlon Hill Player of the Year, the Divisional II equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. - CBSSports.com
He did spend three weeks on the practice squad of the Super Bowl runner up Los Angeles Ram last season.
Most recently Perez was one of the greatest quarterbacks in the long, storied (eight-week or so) history of the AAF earlier this spring.
But to put things in perspective, much like the Vice-President is a heartbeat away from the presidency, Perez could be one chop block away from leading your Detroit Lions.
