Community Rallying To Help Victims Of Battle Creek Apartment Fire

As investigations into the cause of a massive fire at Village Inn Apartments Sunday night in Battle Creek continue, several businesses, organizations and individuals in the community are rallying to help the nearly 80 victims who are now left without a home.

The last emergency crews cleared the scene at approximately 11:30 Monday morning. Seven injuries were reported, but all residents are accounted for. Two firefighters were injured during the blaze and both have received treatment and are recovering.

Here are a few options for those looking to help or for victims looking for resources:

• Jennifer Hollon, owner of Jen-Nay's Hair Studio, is offering free combs, brushes and other hair products for the victims. They can come to the salon at 411 N. 20th Street in Springfield to get the items as well as receive free hair washes and there are snacks available there as well. The salon is open from noon to 8pm Tuesday through Friday and 9am to 1pm Saturday. Anyone with questions can contact Jennifer on Facebook or by calling 269-589-2729.
• Help and Hope Closet is assisting the fire victims with some essential needs like toothbrushes, toothpaste, clothes, bottled water, etc. They are gathering clean blankets and toys also. Victims of the fire or those wishing to donate can visit the location at 78 Maryland Drive in Battle Creek.
• Battle Creek resident Melanie Bird's 12-year-old daughter Elanie has filled several boxes to donate with mostly girl's toys and women's shoes. Items can be picked up at 1461 E. Michigan Avenue in the Wattles Park area.
• The Calhoun County Emergency Network Facebook page has also posted the phone number for the American Red Cross. Those looking to donate to those affected by the fire can call 269-962-7528 for more information.
• Rescued pets can be retrieved at the Calhoun County Animal Center located at 165 Union St. South. The animal center can be reached by calling 269-963-6582.
