An apartment fire in Kalamazoo was caused by a meth lab explosion.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday, October 26th, 2015, at approximately 9:32 a.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to an apartment fire in the 3000 block of S. Burdick St.  Public Safety officers encountered heavy smoke conditions on the apartments’ second floor. Officers quickly began fire suppression operations. The first two officers entering the apartment encountered an active Meth Lab in the main level bathroom.  The fire was quickly extinguished, containing the majority of the fire damage to the bathroom.  The second floor sustained heavy smoke damage. The two residents home at the time of the fire, fled the scene prior to officer’s arrival.

Kalamazoo Public Safety changed their focus once the fire was out to working a drug investigation.  A search warrant was applied for and signed by a judge.  During the search of the apartment, a stolen handgun, along with meth components and meth product were located.  The handgun was found to be stolen out of Kalamazoo Township.  Officers have yet to speak with the two individuals that fled the scene, but have been identified.  No arrests have been made at this time.  This investigation remains open.
