I've just accepted the fact that there are going to be scams taking place until the end of the world, which means we'll always need to be vigilant. We're always looking over our shoulders or keeping track of what to pay attention to, it's quite exhausting. The most frustrating part is that they are consistently changing their methods.

The worst part about scams is that it isn't the same scam over and over, they change and adapt to what's happening around them. Sometimes, they'll even go back to an old scam after trying a couple of new ones. Whether it be a scam to take your identity, gain access to your personal information and files, or steal your money, they're all dangerous.

There's another scam that residents of Michigan are being warned about, but this scam is a little different than the others. This time, the warning comes from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) about a phone call scam that could be dangerous.

The scammers will call from an unrecognizable number and then leave a message saying they need more information to complete and process a loan. This is simply just a phishing attempt to gain access to sensitive personal information like your Social Security number, banking details, or other important information.

The BBB has received numerous reports from Southwest Michigan and hundreds across the United States since December detailing the scam but the BBB says the scam is not tied to a data breach but phone numbers are being used from public records or old data leaks.

Below is a list of steps to take to keep yourself safe from identity theft:

  • Do not return suspicious calls – Scammers will leave a voicemail with their contact information, hoping you’ll call back.
  • Monitor your accounts – Watch for unexplained charges or withdrawals.
  • Check your credit report – Visit AnnualCreditReport.com to review your credit history for free.
  • Secure personal information – Shred documents before discarding them and enable two-factor authentication on financial accounts.

If you fear that you've had your identity taken or have fallen prey to other scams view the BBB scam tracker or contact the Federal Trade Commission as soon as possible.
