It's the hottest show in town!

I don't think this is quite what residents had anticipated when city officials installed the annual holiday light display. Don't get me wrong, we love a good show, but this one was smoking-- literally.

As the quiet town of Charlestown, Indiana was about to drift off to sleep with vision of sugar plum fairies dancing in their head, an almost Grinch-level catastrophe almost destroyed the town's Christmas spirit.

On Friday, December 6 the City of Charlestown, Indiana's social media page posted the following update:

If there was any doubt we're the HOTTEST Christmas show around, we proved it last night! "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" was so [fire] that Comet's tail burned so bright that the Charlestown Fire Department had to extinguish the flames.

Ope! We always knew that 'Comet' was trouble anyway. What could have possibly caused the show to go haywire? Charlestown locals have their own theories:

  • "First a windstorm wipes out the trees and now this. The Grinch has been hard at work" - Shonda Dyer Shaffner
  • "It's probably a bad bulb. If one goes out the whole thing doesn't work. If I were you, I'd personally check each one." - Mike Lawrence
  • "That was Comets speed mode he just couldn’t get lift!!! We have seen that before in the sky" - Stacy Atwood

Will the Show Go On?

Don't worry, the Christmas spirit is alive and well in Charlestown! City officials say that while the animated holiday light show will continue, Santa and his naughty reindeer are taking the rest of the holiday season off. Check out the footage below:
