Battle Creek & Kalamazoo Subways Could Be Shutting Down
Subway Restaurants across the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek area could be shutting down after an announcement was made yesterday by the company that they plan on closing 500 of their currently estimated 26,000 U.S. locations. This news comes a year after the company closed over 800 locations. Freep reports that the company wants to focus on better restaurant locations and boosting sales.
Although the company plans on closing more stores in the United States, they are focusing on expansion overseas, as they plan to open 1,000-plus restaurants in Mexico, the U.K., Germany, South Korea, India and China. Even with the closures, the company says they still remain the largest food chain in the world, with an estimated 44,000 locations in 112 countries. Subway, whose restaurants are all franchisee-owned and operated, couldn't give a list of locations that will be closing, because those decisions are up to the franchisees. Subway was founded in 1965 by Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck. When DeLuca died in 2015, his younger sister Greco took over the company.
