Taste the Philippines as fresh, exotic, native Filipino dishes are now available at a neighborhood grocery store in Kalamazoo. Here's what you have to try.

For the geographically challenged, the Philippines are a chain of more than 7,500 islands in the Western Pacific Ocean. This Southeast Asian country shares a heritage with the region, but also has a culture of its own. Food is a very important part of their tradition.

Aside from breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Filipinos manage to squeeze in a little meal in between, too. Whether they eat every hour or every three hours, they savour every bite. Oh, and they do love going to buffets!

Adventurous food lovers will have to get to Tienda Guatemalteca market on S. Burdick. This Hispanic grocery store has just added a local Filipino take out food service. Home cooked, authentic, fresh and delicious Filipino dishes are available in the refrigerated section for you to take home, heat and enjoy. The cuisine is as varied as the number of  islands, but is generally described as "multi-faceted, and is the most representative in the culinary world for food where 'east meets west.'"

Popular Filipino Dishes:

  • Adobo: Unofficially the national dish of the Philippines, adobo can be made with chicken or pork (sometimes both or neither) and is usually stewed in a sauce made from vinegar, garlic, bay leaf, peppercorns, and soy sauce. Adobo can also be marinated in the sauce and pan fried.
  • Kare-kare: A thick stew made from oxtail, vegetables, and a peanut sauce, kare-kare is not unlike a curry.
  • Lechon: Lechon can be made in a number of ways from the various parts of a pig roasted on a spit. This popular dish is served at special occasions like weddings, Christmas and other festive events.

See the selection for yourself and discover a whole new world of flavors as Filipino food is now available in Kalamazoo.
