Parking Tickets are Back in Kalamazoo
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is enforcing parking laws again. Here's why.
In March of 2020, KDPS suspended parking enforcement after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-at-home order. Now that we see light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, many restrictions have been lifted. However, parking restrictions are back to pre-Covid-19 levels citywide for Kalamazoo.
The main concern for the city was snow removal when they made the announcement of resuming parking enforcement on January 27th, 2021 according to a recent KDPS press release,
Effective immediately, KDPS officers will resume enforcing City Ordinance 36-170, which prohibits vehicles from being parked on any city street between the hours of 2 and 6 a.m

This local ordinance is important because illegally parked vehicles can prevent the city from effectively removing show in the overnight hours. You can do a deep dive on Kalamazoo parking ordinances by clicking here.
If you're currently thinking, "Wait a minute. I could have parked for free pretty much anywhere between March, 2020 and the end of Jan 2021 in Kalamazoo without a ticket?" You're not alone. Because that's exactly what I thought when I read the news.
That leads me to the obvious question. When are they going to enforce the law that requires license plates? I must see 4 cars a day driving around with no plates.
