Kalamazoo Students Collaborate To Help Feed the Hungry

In a time where things still, at times, feel uncertain for a lot of people, Kalamazoo public school students decided to team up to help provide some support and security.

According to WWMT News Channel 3, the annual holiday food drive hosted by the school district was cancelled due to Covid-19. In response, students from Kalamazoo Central High School and Loy Norrix High School decided to team up to make sure that locals weren't going hungry.

Food insecurity is a major issue in this country. And that was before the impact of the pandemic. According to Feeding America, before Covid-19 over 35 million people lived in a food-insecure household. In their latest brief, they say that number could rise to 50 million. In west Michigan alone, 1 in 8 people are food insecure.

These are our neighbors, friends, co-workers. Maybe it's you. That's why programs and food drives, like the one that was cancelled over the holidays, are so important. It's encouraging to see high school students recognizing and acting on that need.

This past Saturday, KCH and LNH students collaborated with Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes to collect non-perishable food donations and monetary donations as well. No word on the amount that was collected but every little bit helps.

• Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes. They do not require anything to 'prove' eligibility and they offer home deliveries county wide.
• The South Michigan Food Bank offers a drive-thru pantry every Tuesday in Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Portage and plenty of other locations.
