For years, the residents of Kalamazoo had been wanting some positive change for downtown, and the new event center may be the ticket to revitalizing the downtown scene once and for all.

There are still some great businesses that are doing a lot of great work driving people downtown, but the city of Kalamazoo is hoping the new event center will drive more money into the city and ultimately breathe new life into the downtown scene.

As hereplymouth.com noted, it will be creating jobs and driving thousands of people to downtown throughout the year:

The project is expected to create around 400 jobs and provide significant economic benefits, including a projected annual benefit of $52.6 million. The center will host the Western Michigan University (WMU) men’s and women’s basketball teams, WMU hockey, and the Kalamazoo Wings professional hockey team. Each year, it is expected to accommodate approximately 700,000 attendees through 105 athletic events and 120 concerts and community events. The venue will have a seating capacity of 6,500 for sporting events and up to 8,000 for concerts, ensuring it can cater to a wide audience.

The 450,000 square-foot event center has the opportunity to make some real change. The event center has faced some backlash in the past, with some people calling it a waste of money that should be spent on the housing crisis, but with any major decision, there will always be people with opposing views.

Do you think this new event center is the key to breathing life back into downtown Kalamazoo, or is there more we need from the city?
