I recall when I was younger that Blimpie subs was one of the major chain sub shops. I of course grew up on the east side of the state, but even getting into my late teens I noticed that Blimpie was starting to disappear from our area. In fact, it wasn't until I drove through Allegan for the first time that I remembered just how scarce they are around here. Sadly for them, another Blimpie closed down last year. In it's place is a new restaurant called Grill 89 that opened in November of 2020 and they're bringing something a little different to the table.

Grill 89 seems like a more straight forward approach to a classic "bar & grill" type menu, featuring appetizer baskets, handheld subs and sandwiches, chicken dinners, a kids meal, and a pizza menu featuring Meat Lovers, Supreme, Buffalo Chicken, & Veggie Lovers pizzas. They also claim their pies take about 40 minutes to cook, as they're the only place in Allegan that uses a pizza oven, but so far have good reviews on them. They suggest calling in advance for pizza orders.

The shop is located at 815 Marshall St, Allegan, MI 49010. As they are adjusting to the new menu and week by week changes, their Facebook page keeps customers updated with daily specials, hours, and info they need to know for the day. Fans of Blimpie subs can still get their fix, as there are still locations in Hillsdale, Zeeland, Grand Rapids & Ada as well. It's just gonna take a little extra long to get there.
