A Pure Michigan Proposal: On Blue Ice in the Straits of Mackinac

A drone photographer captured the beginning of the rest of this couple's lives together with a proposal on the dazzling blue ice near the Mackinac Bridge.

It's a moment you cherish 'til death do you part. Wedding proposals are often as unique as the partners themselves, and there have been some memorable wedding and engagement stories in the news lately, as couples are getting creative. Two Kalamazoo lovers eloped to Loveland, Colorado to pledge their devotion, and another pair's two-hearted devotion was sealed in the parking lot of Bell's Eccentric Cafe. This pure Michigan proposal was captured by a drone photographer and made news all across the world, as far as Yahoo UK.

Part of the the traditional wedding recipe requires something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. In this case, the blue referred to the brilliant blue ice shards of the Great Lakes, in the shadow of the Mackinac Bridge. Mother Nature has turned the brutally cold Northern Michigan temperatures into something beautiful, often only seen on glaciers in regions such as the Antarctic and Iceland. It is, in fact, the pure, untainted, salt-free water on the upper surface of the Great Lakes that allows the blue reflection to be so vividly seen.

Drone pilot and photographer Ryan Latourette was in Mackinaw City to capture some photos and video of this phenomenon when he unwittingly filmed this proposal. He didn't even know it at first, thinking the man who wanted to take the plunge, merely stumbled. “I quickly realized it wasn’t a slip, but was instead a marriage proposal,” he told Storyful. The relationship may have started on thin ice, but we're hoping this couple is off to solid start. We wish them the best and hope neither one gets cold feet before the big day.
