A large amount of heroin and fentanyl was intercepted on its way to the Battle Creek area this week after a bust by a coalition of area law enforcement agencies.

WOODTV says that according to the Southwest Enforcement Team, authorities were tipped off that the drugs were being delivered, leading to them conducting a traffic stop on the suspect around 5pm Tuesday on I-94 near Marshall. A search of the vehicle turned up four ounces of heroin laced with fentanyl, an amount of drugs with a street value of $12,500.

The driver, a Battle Creek woman, was arrested on charges of possession with intent to deliver.

Fentanyl is an opioid that is much more potent than heroin, and some authorities say that its increased use is one of the driving factors in the rise in fatal opioid overdoses in Michigan and beyond.

There are tools to fight back against the overdose problem; last month, the Calhoun County Public Health Department announced that they would be offered up training on how to use the drug Narcan to fight opioid overdose, along with kits containing the drug. More information on those kits can be found here.
