Longtime WMU Basketball coach Steve Hawkins will not be returning for the 2020-2021 season.

Western Michigan University Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

"We appreciate all the contributions he and his family have made to our university and the Kalamazoo community," Beauregard said. "Ultimately, I've decided to make a change in the leadership of the men's basketball program. Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately." - Kathy Beauregard via wmubroncos.com

Hawkins has been a part of the basketball program for two decades and has been head coach for 17 seasons. During that span, the team has only been to the NCAA basketball tournament only twice, losing to Vanderbilt in 2004, in Hawkins's first season at the helm, and to Syracuse in 2014.

Hawkins' career record at WMU was 291-262, but only had two winning seasons in the past six, and the Broncos finished this season Monday night with a 13-19 record..

Beauregard says the search for a new coach will begin immediately.
