Second Baby Wolf Death From EEE At Binder Park Zoo Confirmed

Binder Park Zoo officials in Battle Creek have confirmed that a second Mexican gray wolf pup that died earlier this month died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis. The report came just a day after reports that the first wolf pup, which had died just a few days before, also had EEE.

Speaking to WWMT, zoo officials said both pups were part of a litter born to a breeding pair of Mexican gray wolves back in June. The remaining pup and both parents are currently reported in good condition, but zoo officials are continuing to monitor the situation. Last week, the first human case of EEE in Calhoun County was reported when an adult resident had tested positive.

Several cases have now been confirmed in residents of Barry, Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, and Van Buren counties, including three deaths. It has led to sweeping changes for outdoor activities for schools and organizations, as the weather has not cooled down enough to kill off mosquitoes yet this fall.
