Michiganders Who Leave Their Pets Outside May Go To Jail

In the extreme cold weather you may to go jail if you leave your pets outside. 

It is always a good rule of thumb that if the weather is too extreme for you, it's too much for your pet. Now the State of Michigan is willing to prosecute those that do not adhere to that theory. The Dailytribune.com is reporting that even though there are no laws against having your pet live outdoors, there is a penal code that would allow the state to prosecute those that do during this cold snap our state is experiencing. The Michigan Penal Code does require that all animals have access to fresh water, food, and adequate shelter. If found guilty of violating the code, you could be charged with a misdemeanor or felony, which results in significant prison time and fines.

If you are wondering what "adequate shelter" it basically means protection form the weather conditions you are currently experiencing and the age, breed and health of the pet must be taken into consideration. If you are found guilty of not providing a safe place for your furry friends, here is what you will be facing...

• Up to $1,000 in fines
• Up to 200 hours of community service

The fines and prison time only increase with the more animals you have. Animal control officers throughout the state will be checking local areas to make sure pets are being properly cared for, and are asking for people to be vigilante on reporting the welfare of pets in their area.
