A man in Leelanau County crashed his car and is blaming it on a spider.

A 26 year old man freaked out when he spotted a spider in his car and crashed into the side of the road. The Detroit Free Press reported...

The single-car accident happened around 10 a.m. Sunday when the driver became distracted by a spider in his visor, according to a Facebook post from the Leelanau County Sheriff's Department. He reportedly veered his GMC Envoy into a ditch, coming to rest in heavy brush and trees.

The driver of the car was not injured in the crash but, the passenger of the vehicle was. The 29 year old woman was treated at the scene of the crash for a wrist injury.

A car accident involving bugs is not a rarity. In fact, a few years ago ABC.com reported a horrible accident that involved a spider...

"An Indiana woman's car collided with a school bus after she saw a spider and jumped from the driver's seat, authorities said."

I was surprised at how accidents on the road can be blamed on bugs! automotoportal.com reported that...

"Over half a million motorists* have had a car accident thanks to distractions caused by insects and bugs, totalling an estimated £44 million of car damage each year"

The article went on to say...

“The symptoms of an insect phobia can be significantly heightened when driving a car, as feelings of fear and anxiety intensify when one is locked in an enclosed space, producing the potential for a severe phobic response and considerable level of panic.”

So, if you see a bug in your car, keep cool and cruise on!
