Call it the Mighty Mac, call it The Bridge, but please don't call the Mackinac Bridge the Big Mac, that's a hamburger.

Want to pick a fight with a Michigander, try confusing our signature piece of infrastructure with McDonald's signature two-all-beef-patties-special-sauce sandwich. You're likely to get an earful.

Of course if you do consider the Bridge the Big Mac, it'd be the the only calorie free Big Mac there is. Your cardiologist would be pleased.

It's possible the Mighty Mac might never had been. There was a competing plan to not build the bridge across the Straits of Mackinac, the traditional dividing line between Northern and Lower Michigan, but rather a series of causeways using Mackinac Island and Bois Blanc island to move vehicles between the Lower Peninsula and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Even if you must call the Mackinac Bridge the Big Mac, it's still a well deserved moniker as it's the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere.
