Homeless Shelter For LGBTQ Community To Open In Michigan In 2021
One thing those who don't associate with the LGBTQ community may not realize is that kids and people being kicked out of their homes or running away for rejection because of their sexual orientation is a regular thing. It's comforting to know that in Detroit, by the middle of next year, a new housing project is expected to be finished, to mainly house homeless who are a part of the LGBTQ community. The project was reported by the Detroit News who say the 43-unit mixed-use housing is a, "collaboration between the Ruth Ellis Center and a Chicago-based non-profit developer, Full Circle Communities."
The project itself, totaling more than $10 million, will offer services along with housing, including access to primary care doctors and mental health counseling and will have a special emphasis on providing stable housing for transgender women of color. According to executive director of the Ruth Ellis Center, Jerry Peterson, the target group for the shelter are LGBTQ people between the ages of 18 and 25.
This Spring, a $10 million homeless shelter will break ground here in Kalamazoo, hopefully providing a safe place for those going through hard times.
