How To Stay Safe While Online Dating
A life was lost while looking for love
The sad news came just after Christmas that a young man's life was lost. Mlive reported that Michigan State Police confirmed Kevin Bacon, 25, was found dead the morning of Saturday, Dec. 28, at a house in Bennington Township in Shiawassee County. Police arrested a 50-year-old man of Bennington Township on an open murder charge, police confirmed. Open murder contains both first- and second-degree murder.
Kevin's roommate told authorities that Kevin had planned to meet a person he met on the online dating site Grindr on Dec.24th at 5 pm. About an hour after the time the date started, Kevin texted his roommate saying he was going to be out for a while, and he wasn’t sure when he’d be back, but that he was having fun. After that he was not heard from again until police discovered his body.
Being single today comes with challenges. You want to meet people, yet most dates are generated online. How can you protect yourself from perpetrators or even know if you have set a date with a mad person?
Pride.com has some great tips to stay safe while meeting new people on line!
1. Do some background checking...
If you're talking to someone on a dating app and you think there might be a chance you'd want to go on an "real' date with them, it doesn't hurt to do some quick investigative work. There are a lot of online services that help you run a criminal background check on someone, and a lot of states even have public criminal records, making it easy for you to go and find out more about someone's past. (It also doesn't hurt to check out their social media profiles.)
2. If you go on a date with someone you met on an app, meet them in a safe, public setting...
Meeting up with someone (especially if you don't know them too well) in a public place (like a restaurant or a coffee shop or a busy shopping center) where there are lot of other people around is a great thing to do. If a situation ever becomes uncomfortable and you find yourself needing help, there will be a ton of people around to help. Never let strangers into your home and never agree to go to a stranger's home.
3. Always let your friends know where you are going and how long you plan to be out...
If you want to hookup with someone you met on an app, it's best to always let your friends and the people closest to you know exactly where you are going and how long you plan to be out and about for. If something bad were to ever happen to you while you were out on a date (we hope that's never the case!), you want as many people to know as much information as possible.
Just be safe out there and hope you find love!
