A day at the beach with the family turned tragic over the weekend; Here are tips to keep your loved ones safe!

Over the weekend a tragic event happened in Lake Michigan near South Haven beach. A 13 year old boy drowned. On Saturday a 911 call was placed when two people were seen struggling in the water.

Authorities rushed to the scene and the adult was rescued by a paddle boat, but unfortunately it was too late for the young man of only 13 years old. Even though CPR was performed on the young man it was not enough to save him.

A fun day at the beach can turn tragic very quickly. We always ask people to keep any eye on the ones that you are there with at the beach, as well as others around you. We want them to come and enjoy the water and the sun, but we have to be very cautious.

The loss of this young man's life is devastating, something that no family wants to face. To hopefully avoid another horrific loss Statefarm, com recommends that...

Knowledge is key when it comes to water and pool safety. Educating children from a very young age, and keeping yourself informed, can lead to a lifetime of healthy, safe swimmers.

Tips for water safety to help prevent another young death are...

  • Swim near lifeguards.
  • Stay within designated swimming areas.
  • Beware of rip currents. They are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore that can occur at any beach with breaking waves, including the Great Lakes. T
  • Know your limits. Swimming in open water is much different than in a pool. Cold water, currents, and other dangerous conditions can challenge even the strongest swimmers. If you are unsure about your limits, you may want to start out slowly and not venture too far from shore.

Have fun, but please be safe when frock-ling in the Great Lakes.
