What Should Portage Re-name ‘Sears Drive’
Another anchor store disappears, so what do we call the lane?
It has been widely published, including on Wikipedia that Sears Holdings filed for bankruptcy protection in October 2018 and plans to close about 142 of its 700 stores by the end of 2018. According to CNN Sears, which had operated nearly 3,800 stores as recently as a decade ago is now down to 1,104 stores.
The sad part is that one of the Sears stores shutting their doors is at Crossroads Mall in Portage. The questions that weighs on my mind is what are we going to re-name 'Sears Drive'?
Here are the sad but telling responses I found on Facebook...
- Ryan Harter: Empty Rd.
- Bill Sargent: Closed Road
- Susan Griffith-Conroy: Loser Lane!
- Mark Plotner: Bankruptcy Dr.
- Tina Tucker-Phelps: Adios Rd.
- Mellissa Doubblestein Porter: Vacant Dr.
- Joe Sweeter: Amazon Dr.
- Pat Bowers: Chapter 11 Dr.
- Abbie Hamilton: Dead Mall Drive
- Marisa Van Oosterhout: Ghost Town Road
Maybe the city will keep the street name in memory of the store...or at this point the mall.
