Pretty Good Weekend for WMU Football, Hockey
A pretty successful weekend for Western Michigan University football and hockey this weekend. The football team won the must-win against Central Michigan, and in the process became bowl-eligible with the season's sixth victory. Meanwhile, Bronco hockey team split a home and home series with the University of Michigan.
The 10th or 11th ranked Wolverines (depending on the poll) won the see-saw Friday night game in Ann Arbor 6-5, while the Broncos came back to split the weekend series with a 5-4 victory at Lawson Ice Arena Saturday night. Cam Lee scored two goals Friday night, while Ethen Frank added three points in the effort, plus a goal on Saturday night, when five different Broncos scored to beat Michigan. The Broncos are now 3-2 on the season.
The football team's victory in Mt. Pleasant was more than gaining bragging right. The sixth victory of the season makes Western bowl-eligible. That doesn't guarantee a trip to a bowl game, but it is the first step in the process.
The Broncos have knocked out six wins in a row after starting the season with two losses to big schools. They are undefeated in the MAC conference at 4-0.
It's a short turnaround for Western, with a Thursday night matchup against Toledo, the defending MAC champions.
It's an even shorter turnaround for the hockey team, which plays Tuesday night at Bowling Green.
