I love to read the article about the first baby born locally in the new year.  Just think that's a pretty cool distinction for that family to have.  A very special footnote to the birth of a new child.

This year, I laughed out loud when I read the MLive article by Theresa Ghiloni about the first baby born in 2014.

In the article, April Pashby talks about giving birth to her daughter Evelyn during the fireworks in downtown Kalamazoo.  She says that she was joking with the nurses that instead of 12:05am on January 1, 2014, that it was actually 11:59pm on December 31, 2013.  Here's the line that made me laugh, "...I'm Dutch enough that I really wanted that tax deduction."  That's awesome!

My wife gave birth to our son, Jack, on January 9, 2008.  I'll admit that there was a part of me that was hoping for a 12/31 delivery for that very same reason!

Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Congratulations to the Pashby family.
