Another downtown business closes; it's the end of an era. And yes, after 25 years, that is the end of an era. Olde Peninsula Brew Pub and Restaurant, at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Portage Street, downtown, announced Thursday morning (July 8th) it is closing for good.

'After 25 years we are sad to announce that we have to close our doors permanently. We have made so many friends/family that have supported us throughout the years, we hope that you will join us on Saturday, July 24th for cheers and beers to celebrate the wonderful years! Watch for details to follow.' - Olde Peninsula on Facebook.

Many have memories of Olde Peninsula. It hosted many a radio broadcast on St. Patrick's Day, which was the anniversary of its opening in 1996. Its early advertising featured "Brewmaster Dan" who was a talented brewer. And with the announcement of the closing this morning, it brought out many a sad comment from its fans.

Jeff Hoskinson:

"Oh noooo! Lived in Portage when you first opened in 1996 and became a lifelong fan of your Rockin’ Razberry Wheat, grabbing growlers whenever I visit the Zoo. Heartbreaking news but I wish you all the best."

Corey Brasher:

"I am beyond sad to hear this. My wife and I had our first date there in 2003, I asked my wife to marry me there in 2004, and my bartender at OPs was my wedding bartender. My kids love your food and we love the brewpub dip. I wish it had not come down to this."

Jason Brautigam:

"Sad day!!!! You are the reason I started drinking craft beer 21 years ago."

What's Next?

It's hard to believe the powers that be in downtown Kalamazoo will allow the location to stay empty for long, but with other establishments "pausing" due to a lack of staffing, it's hard to predict what will actually happen. The city and the downtown development groups have made a big push to promote Bates Alley, which runs partially behind Olde Peninsula, and this loss will have a major effect on that.

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
