Lightning bugs have officially returned to Michigan just in time to light up the twilight hours as we approach summer.
Lightning bugs are one of the most celebrated and loved insects, and let’s be honest, one of the few insects that Michiganders actually enjoy.

Recently, the Michigan storm chasers posted that lightning bugs are coming back after several sightings occurred across Indiana in Ohio. The owners of the page were waiting to see confirmed sightings in Michigan, which were quickly identified in the comment section of their Facebook post.
Already in Michigan, people are confirming that fireflies are back:
I've seen lightning bugs in Lapeer County since before May 15th. I've been outside photographing the northern lights and was amazed at how early in the season they were out in my yard. Wish I had an exact date on the first time I saw them, but I know May 15th was my second night seeing them while shooting northern lights. -Colleen S.
It’s important to know that, unlike the graphic they used, lightning bugs do not migrate; however, it is important to know the best way to ensure that you will get lightning bugs in your yard, according to one person who maintains a yard in a way that will harvest lightning bug eggs:
This is why I LEAVE my LEAVES!! Lightning bugs and ladybugs BOTH use leaf litter to overwinter in their nymph forms. I've had a marked increase in both since I started leaving my back yard unraked.- Kim H.
As more days pass, I’m sure we will be seeing more of these bugs, light up the ground in southwest Michigan.
