Police are warning all pet owners to take precautions to protect their animals.

A family simply let their small dog out in their yard during the early evening hours last week and with in a moment their precise fur baby was attacked. The attack was so bad that the elderly dog needed to be put down.

It wasn't the age of the dog or that it was small, it is because coyotes are now apart of Michigan life.

Mlive.com is reporting that...

"Police in Metro Detroit are urging residents to take precautions when letting pets outside after a Coyote reportedly attacked and killed an elderly dog as sightings in the area increase. "

The incident happened Friday night in Canton and police are taking the increased sightings of the animal very serious. In fact, the Canton Police department has a full page on their web-site focused on the topic. Also, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports that...

Coyotes will feast on garbage, gardens and pet foods in urban areas like Canton. "

Over the years coyotes have learned to not only adopt but thrive in urban areas and can be found in every county in Michigan.
