Quarterback Jon Wassink threw five touchdown passes, including two to tight end Giovanni Ricci, to lead the Western Michigan University Broncos to a season opening 48-13 trouncing of Monmouth at Waldo Stadium.

Wassink's numbers were impressive, completing 20 of 25 passes for 368 yards. DaShon Bussell and Ricci led the Broncos with five receptions each, while Levante Bellamy carried the ball 18 times for 53 yards rushing.

One of the highlights in the victory was Jaylen Hall's acrobatic one handed touchdown reception.

Another bright spot for Western has to be the play of the defense, under new defensive coordinator Lou Esposito. The Broncos held the Hawks to just two touchdowns.and 322 yards of offense, and managed a 1st half ending goal line stand that kept Monmouth from scoring.

WMU faces a much more difficult opponent next Saturday when they travel to East Lansing to play the Spartans at Michigan State. MSU opened their season with a 28-7 win over Tulsa on Friday night.

The team will return to Waldo Stadium for a game against Georgia State, which upset Tennessee of the SEC 38-30 this afternoon.
