Vladdie, Grant Hill, Among Ten Added To Michigan Sports HOF
Basketball Hall of Famer Grant Hill, Detroit Red Wing defensive stalwart Vladimir Konstantinov, Michigan State "Flintstone" Morris "Mo" Peterson and Charles Woodson, the 1997 Heisman Trophy Winner and two-time All-American football defensive back for the University of Michigan, who followed that with a successful NFL career and Super Bowl win with the Green Bay Packers, are among the ten new inductees into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
They will be joined by Diane Dietz, an all-state multi-sport athlete from Farmington Hills who set the scoring record for women’s basketball at the University of Michigan that stood for 36 years; Canton native Allison Schmitt won 17 medals in international swimming competitions, including eight Olympic medals, four of them gold. Dan Fife coached 700 wins at his alma mater, Clarkston High School, that's third all-time in Michigan.
Former Detroit Pistons executive Tom Wilson will inducted as a contributor, and the Detroit News' Mike O'Hara and the Associated Press' Harry Atkins are going in a media members.
Hill was one of the best players in basketball until injuries slowed him down. He won national championships at Duke, played on the second Olympic "Dream Team" in 1996 and spent six seasons with the Detroit Pistons. He is in both the Basketball and College Basketball Halls of Fame.
Konstantinov was one of the "Russian Five" who left the former Soviet Union and restored the Detroit Red Wings to glory in the 1990's. His career was tragically cut short after he was paralyzed after a team celebration following the Red Wings winning the Stanley Cup in 1997.
Petersen was one of the "Flint-stones" from Flint, who helped lead the Michigan State Spartans to a national title in 2000; still coach Tom Izzo's only championship. He still hold the record for consecutive games played in the NBA, with the Toronto Raptors.
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies are on Saturday October 5, at Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel.
