Stone Temple Pilots Have a New Lead Singer and Are Working on New Music
A year and a half after holding a public search for a new singer, Stone Temple Pilots have found their man. In a new Interview, bassist Robert DiLeo broke the news, but won't reveal who it is yet.
"We've been working with someone – I don't want to name names yet – and we're making music," he told Rolling Stone. "I don't know if he's well-known or unknown; I don't look at him as 'well-known.' But we're writing music and we're hopefully looking at finishing a record and putting it out soon."
Whoever the new singer is, he will undoubtedly have a specter of doom hanging over him. Scott Weiland, their original vocalist with whom they rose to fame in the early '90s, died of an accidental drug overdose in December 2015. By that point, he had been out of the band for several years.
They attempted to carry on in 2013 with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, which resulted in an EP called High Rise, but Bennington left in 2015 to be with Linkin Park full-time. Bennington hanged himself on July 20. In 2016, there was briefly a rumor that Scott Stapp of Creed was linked with the band, but it was quickly denied.
Tomorrow, Stone Temple Pilots will release a five-disc expansion of their 1992 breakout debut, Core. In addition to a remastered version of the original album, there is a second disc of demos and b-sides, two more of live performances, a DVD of videos and a vinyl copy of Core. You can check out "Only Dying," a perviously unreleased song that was originally intended to be in the movie The Crow, here.
