Michigan May Pass A Bill To Ban The Ban of Bag Banning

Just when laws could not become more confusing check out the latest bill Michigan is trying to pass.

Rep. Robert Wittenberg, a Democrat  from Huntington Woods, has introduced House Bill 4500 to repeal the law the legislature put in place in 2016.

The bill that passed back in 2016 (that Mr. Witenberg) is trying to reverse, is the banning of local communities from banning plastic bags and other single-use containers.

I know it sounds pretty confusing, but here is what is happening. Mr. Wittenberg told Mlive about the bill he is attempting to have pass in our state.

The bill would both let local communities address plastic bags as an environmental concern and bring back local control in this area. The bill doesn’t require local communities to ban plastic bags, but brings back the option.

Mlive noted that Mr. Wittenberg  introduced the bill just after Earth Day, and listed environmental concerns associated with bags, including their contaminating water supplies and killing fish. Also Mr. Witenberg does not stand alone on this bill, he has  bipartisan support from Rep. Gary Howell, R-North Branch, who is a co-sponsor of the bill.

It will be interesting to see how this ban plays out and what stores will ban plastic bags. Just think about what great job Aldi is doing by charging a small fee if you forgot your bags. I wonder if we will see more of that in the future.
