Michigan Author Who Wrote ‘Bird Box’ To Release Sequel Next Week

The movie "Bird Box," which took the world by storm in 2018, was never intended to have a sequel. In fact, the author of the book, Josh Malerman, was quite content with the way his story ended. That was until he saw the film adaption of his 2014 book. His mind changed after watching the film, as he told Oakland Press writer Monica Drake about how it impacted him:

At the end of the movie, I turned to (my fiancée) Allison and said, ‘I want to find out what happens next.

Now it seems Malerman is primed and ready to release the sequel to the first book with his new one titled "Malorie."  In the book, the story takes place 12 years after the ending of "Bird Box." Malorie and her now teenage kids have relocated from the school of the blind, the sanctuary they found at the end of the first book. Malerman went on to describe the premise:

It’s like a day in the life of (Malorie and her kids). … Malorie can be described as paranoid and hysterical, and she definitely has PTSD from what happened (in ‘Bird Box’). … Her ultimate defense is still, and will always be, a blindfold.

There's no word as of yet if there will be a film adaption of 'Malorie' but it seems like the author has left it on the table that he has a strong interest in the character and the series. Who knows where it will go from here. The book is scheduled for release on July 21st, 2020 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon or through Penguin Random House.
