A Kalamazoo family is displaced after a Friday evening fire caused severe damage to their two story home. The family's cat and two dogs perished in the blaze along with other irreplaceable items. On Friday, at around 6:10 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 3800 block of South Burdick Street for a report of a porch fire. When officers arrived on scene they found heavy smoke and fire conditions that had spread to the front of the home. The fire caused energized power lines to fall in the immediate area, blocking traffic on South Burdick Street.

Fire suppression efforts were started and the fire was brought under control in approximately 35 minutes. Officers were on scene for about two hours conducting fire fighting operations. No civilians or firefighters were injured in this incident. The fire cause is under investigation by the Fire Marshal.
