When you have a state championship held in any sport in Michigan, several parents come to support their kids on the playing field. For the last two years in Team Wrestling, it was held in Mt. Pleasant after a long stretch in Battle Creek that began in 1998.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced today that the Team Wrestling semifinals and finals will return to Southwest Michigan, entering a four-year commitment to Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. It's the first time the Team Wrestling finals will be held in Kalamazoo since the sport was recognized in 1978 and 1979, holding the Class A tournaments.

This will be the second set of championship determined in Kalamazoo, where the Lower Peninsula tiles for Girls Tennis (Division 3) and Boys Tennis (division not determined for this fall) are held at Kalamazoo College. They have been a host for at least one class or division, either boys or girls, since the MHSAA began in 1978.

Other current sites for MHSAA state championships in Southwest Michigan are in Battle Creek, include Girls Volleyball (at Kellogg Arena since 2007), Boys and Girls Bowling (held Division 3 earlier this year at M-66 Bowl) and Girls Golf (multiple divisions at Bedford Valley Golf Club since 2012 ).

In other news from the MHSAA, the Individual Wrestling semifinals and finals will move to Ford Field in Detroit next year after a long stint at The Palace of Auburn Hills, and shorten to a two-day event instead of three. The Girls Basketball semifinals and finals will move next year from Michigan State University's Breslin Center to Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, on the campus of Calvin College. Finally, the recently-split two-division 8-Player Football state championships will return to the site of the first title game six years ago, the Superior Dome at Northern Michigan University.

Here's a look back at a previous MHSAA Wrestling final held in Southwest Michigan, the 2011-12 Finals meet at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
