Talk about going out with a flourish. Western Michigan quarterback Jon Wassink, who led the Broncos to seven wins this season, will play in the First Responder Bowl in Dallas on December 30th. Two weeks later, he gets married. But this stretch of big events begins with the announcement today Wassink has won the Danny Wuerffel Trophy.

The trophy recognizes the college football player "who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement."

"It's definitely an honor." Wassink told Bronco broadcaster Robin Hook. "We talked about it all year, the more success the team has, the more success that every individual has. And I think you're seeing that."

Wassink credits another Wuerffel winner from Western, Tim Hiller, and his predecessor, Zach Terrell, who won the other trophy Wassink was up for, the Campbell Trophy, which is considered the academics Heismann.

Several of the past winners include former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, USC quarterback Matt Barkley and former Chicago Bear Sam Acho.
