Michigan ranked 28th in 2003 then 41st in 2015 in reading performance according to the latest report from Education Trust-Midwest.

4th Grade reading performance is not the only concern in this report.

• Michigan ranked 42nd in fourth-grade math, down from 27 in 2003.

• Michigan ranked 31st in eighth-grade reading, down from 27th in 2003.

• Michigan ranked 38th in eight-grade math, down from 34th.

These are alarming numbers.  However, we should use caution while reading this report according to this Battle Creek Enquirer story,

Some educators have cautioned about drawing too many conclusions from the NAEP data because the threshold for passing is so difficult, the  exam is not based on any one state’s standards, and it’s taken only by a representative sample of students. In fourth-grade reading, for instance, 3,100 Michigan students were tested.

This report comes just a couple weeks after 94 schools were forced to shut down in Detroit after teachers protested with a sickout.  The reason for the sickout?  The state claimed they no longer had money to pay the teachers past June 30th.

These stories combined with the Flint Water Crisis has put Governor Snyder in hot water most politicians could not imagine.

What do you think about this latest report on Michigan's dropping education numbers?
