Broncos Challenge, Fall Short to 4th-Ranked Trojans
The Western Michigan Broncos were looking to overcome their first challenges of the 2017 football season in Los Angeles against the 4th-ranked team in the nation. Not only was it the first game as head coach for former Bronco quarterback Tim Lester, but it was a chance to top the Southern California Trojans in their first ever meeting.
The two teams were tied in each of the first three quarters, but the Trojans would scored four touchdowns in the final quarter to defeat the Brown and Gold 49-31.
Junior running back Jamari Bogan would score the first touchdown on the season, part of a 15-carry, 77-yard afternoon. The Broncos would be led on the ground by sophomore LeVante Bellamy's 102 yards on nine carries.
Sophomore quarterback Jon Wassink made a stellar debut under center, rushing for 40 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. He also caught a 27-yard pass on a wideout flat pass from Keishawn Watson for another score. Through the air Wassink struggled, going 11-of 22 for 67 yards and an interception. That pick would be returned for another USC touchdown in the final stanza.
Senior Darius Phillips also added a 100-yard kickoff return to tie the ball game at 28 before the Trojans would pull away.
The Broncos return to action Saturday, September 9th as they take a shorter road trip, this time to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans opened with a 35-10 victory over the Bowling Green Falcons.
