We all seem to be in a financial situation that leaves us trying to find groceries at the most affordable prices and to get the most out of our money when it comes to buying power. The downside about having so many dollar stores in Michigan is that although the convenience is there with the products being so cheap, the value has never been worse.

For what you’re actually getting for your money, it puts people in a position where those are the only kind of groceries that they can afford. With the recent sale of Family Dollar by the Dollar Tree Company, the future of Family Dollar hangs in the balance.

We saw a massive number of Family Dollar stores closed down in 2024, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that people here in the community are taking advantage of these open businesses.

This is where Satnam Singh and his Uncle, Labana Gerwinder, who own Howard’s Party Store, come in. The newly opened Edison Supermarket located at 1261 Portage St. in Kalamazoo is where the former Family Dollar stood, but now serves as an affordable grocery option for members of the community.

He recently spoke to Mlive about the importance of his grocery market serving people who are in immediate need of groceries who live very nearby:

I want to make the supermarket whatever people need. It’s going to be discounted prices, it’s going to be good prices. We’re going to put in a small restaurant, where people can come and get their takeout and hot foods. Once renovations have been made, an official grand opening will be held.
