Skipping stones as a kid was fun, now it can land you on TV

Tune in to ESPN 3, and experience the 51st Annual W. T. Rabe Stone Skipping Competition on Mackinac Island. The event will air on ESPN 3 at 12:30 pm on July 4, immediately after Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest.

The Detroit Free Press announced that anyone can take part in the contest. Registration starts at 9 am, at Windermere Point on Mackinac. At 10 am, the amateur/family competition will take place. There is a free dock party at Star Lines at 11 am, and then the professionals will get started at noon, with the broadcast starting at 12:30.

The best part of the competition will be the professionals picking up a stone to skip. There will be  ten professional skippers that will be vying to break the world record of “most consecutive skips of a stone on water”. the record to break is 88 skips! Think of that 88, I consider myself lucky if I make 3 skips with a stone.

What a great weekend for insane contests, I am afraid I will be spending some time in front of the TV!
