Remembering George Steele’s Hilarious Zoo Adventure With Mean Gene
There was a time when professional wrestling was overly cartoonish, and the height of this was the mid 80s, when WWF, now known as WWE, did off-the-wall, video packages, like George "The Animal" Steel visiting the Detroit Zoo on Saturday Night’s Main Event on October 5 in 1985.
In the video package, "Mean" Gene Okrelund goes looking for George in a place he must have felt very at home in, the Detroit Zoo:

We are here looking for the most elusive creature on this entire planet. No, it’s not Bigfoot, The Loch Ness monster or Judge Crater. I could only be talking about about George “The Animal” Steel. Now we’ve had reports that he’s been seen here at the Detroit Zoological Park and if anybody could find him, I can. Come along.
When they finally meet up, they feature many of the animals that were there at the time.
Probably one of the funnier parts of the video is when Gene asks George what kind of tiger that is, and George replies with "Detroit." Gene Replies
Detroit Tiger? He does seem a little sleepy this season…
That was a timely joke considering the year before the Detroit Tigers won the World Series, but in 1985, they finished 15 games behind first place and were nowhere close to the playoffs.
Although he was born as William Myers, George Steele was one of the more interesting characters of the WWF in the 80s, who was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. George was actually highly educated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and a Master's degree from Central Michigan University.
