Former NBC's The Voice judge Adam Levine was apparently "very difficult" to work with during season 16 of the show.

In new details obtained by Paige Six's TVLine, Levine did not even want to attend the second to last episode of the season, where the final four performed. Levine did not have any of his contestants still on the show in part to the new format of the show creating no guarantee that every coach would have a contestant in the final four. The live cross battle rounds weren't a big hit with the fans either.

Because of the new competition style, Levine did not have any of his contestants even in the semi-finals. “I still don’t understand how you’re not on my team," Levine said during a taping. "I don’t think anybody does, just ’cause it’s weird how it works now. I’m still learning the rules of the new show.” Host Carson Daly didn't even reach out to Levine for any critiques or comments after half of the performances during the final episodes.

Initially, on May 10, NBC announced that Levine would be returning for season 17. But only days later on May 24, host Daly announced his departure on the Today Show. Things seemed to go wrong during the NBC Upfronts presentation on May 13 with Levine less than enthusiastic while just standing on stage for the promotional event. “Adam had been checked out for a while,” an NBC insider tells TVLine, “but this was a new low. It was essentially the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Paul Telegdy, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment was on site to watch the event and was not pleased with Levine's performance. An insider even noted that he was "embarrassed" and "furious" that Levine acted that way when these are the people who paid his previous $26 million annual salary.

Gwen Stefani will be replacing Levine as a judge for season 17 of The Voice.
