As federal officials have begun separating illegal immigrants from their children at the U.S./Mexico border, in Texas; Southwest Michigan's Representative Fred Upton (R-MI) has issued a statement condemning the situation. This following statements from former first ladies Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton.

“It’s time for this ugly and inhumane practice to end. Now. It’s never acceptable to use kids as bargaining chips in political process. For some time, I’ve said that separating young, innocent children from their parents is the wrong approach. The right approach is legislation to address the root issues. This week, the House should vote on a bill that would keep families together, give long-term stability to Dreamers, and improve our border security. Enough finger pointing. Time for action and solutions.” -Rep. Fred Upton

Former First Lady Laura Bush said earlier today in the Washington Post and via Twitter:

I live in a border state. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.

This was re-tweeted by former First Lady Michelle Obama, who added "Sometimes truth transcends party."

As this situation has moved to the top of the national debate, Upton says the U.S. House of Representatives is planning to vote on two immigration reform bills this week. Similar efforts to fix the situation are underway in the U.S. Senate.
