At the end of the day, it comes down to analytics and studies done on how much crime is done given the size of the city. As expected Detroit & Kalamazoo made the Top 5 of the list, but how did THIS city of all places get put in the #2 spot?

Believe it or not, the company named Benton Harbor of all places the 2nd most dangerous city in the entire state. The reasoning behind this may be in a case of per capita, and not necessarily because of the high number of crimes though:
Benton Harbor is another one of the most dangerous cities in Michigan. With a population of 8,892, Benton Harbor has a crime rate of 6,365 per 100k people, making the city 169% more dangerous than the national average. The chance of becoming the victim of a violent crime is 1 in 29. In 2021, the city recorded two murders, eleven robberies, 285 assaults, and 67 burglaries being recorded in 2023.
Regardless of what this list indicates, each of these cities is an important part of our state, with locally owned businesses that need are support and are in no way a living breathing crime spree.
