Shoppers in Battle Creek may soon save 10% on all of their groceries while using the self-checkout. That, of course, rides on the mayor of Battle Creek, Mark Benkhe, and whether or not he was being serious when responding to someone who wasn’t supportive of this idea.

The idea comes from a report that was initially introduced by Nikki Lucas, a democrat from Brooklyn, with the idea to promote consumer fairness.

Recently, someone on Facebook shared the story and tagged Battle Creek’s mayor, who was quick to respond to the concept, saying:

I will check with the city attorney. I will get back to you!

supermarketnews.com shared the concept that was introduced to New York City lawmakers, as Lucas expressed how cost savings retailers get from people using self-checkout stations should be passed on to the people doing the work, the consumer:

Retail businesses increasingly rely on self-checkout systems to reduce staffing and operational costs by shifting responsibilities traditionally performed by employees onto consumers.

The law also comes with a fine, which, if passed, would cost the grocer wages for one full shift at the highest hourly pay rate up to $1000 per day.

It seems to me that the mayor of Battle Creek was taking the idea seriously, so maybe we’ll start to save a little bit at the self-checkout soon.

I feel like this would be a very fair thing to implement, considering even 15 items can easily bring a price of over $100, especially with the rising cost of food we've been seeing.
