Mackinac Bridge to Close Labor Day
For the first time in its 60 year tradition, the Mackinac Bridge will close for the 2017 Annual Bridge Walk on Labor Day.
Due to safety and security recommendations by the Michigan State Police and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Mackinac Bridge Authority decided to temporarily close the bridge from 6:30 AM to Noon. No walkers will be permitted to begin the walk after 10 AM, as it takes about one-and-a-half hours to complete the crossing.
The only vehicles allowed on the “Mighty Mac” will be shuttle busses and emergency vehicles.
G. Mennen Williams was the first governor to lead the Mackinac Bridge Walk, in June of 1958. The walk was changed to Labor Day in 1959.
